What is a niche? People use this term frequently, however a niche could be described as a suitable position, or it could refer to denoting products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population.
Within the music industry there are many people wearing "multiple hats." While it may be necessary at times to function in different roles, the key is to narrow things down a bit and really specialize in one area. In fact specialization is really the name of the game, when it comes to finding success with music.
Here is a fallacy I want to dispel. Most artists they really think they can do everything, but the truth is they would feel much more fulfilled in doing one or two things really well, rather than spreading themselves too thin.
For example, Say your a songwriter and let's say you can write really catchy songs, with incredible lyrics and memorable hooks. But when it comes to recording, your a novice. Or lets say your an incredible guitarist and can play guitar like Eric Clapton, But when it comes to writing lyrics, you can't come up with anything. What do you do then to move forward? The answer is simple. You find collaborators who can do what you can't, and then choose to work with them.
Do you see my point? Specialization and finding a unique focus is the key to finding your success in the music industry. By doing things well, and finishing projects you will find more satisfaction and thus build a good reputation for yourself. The same cannot be said of doing things half-baked, or unsatisfactorily.

Excellence will always attract attention, and that is why specialization and finding a niche is important. The more time you put into your craft to improve your skills and master the process, the more easily it will be to produce results that impress and attract the right clientele.
Let's face it, the music business is a competitive field. There are many people out there hungry and willing to provide a service or skill to anyone willing to pay, however what separates amatuers from professionals is the cultivation of focus, discipline, and excellence within a niche.
So let me ask you a few questions. What are you passionate about? What drives your creativity? What talents or skills do you possess that you could leverage in order create a niche for yourself?
My Advice? Pick one thing your passionate about, and really get good at it. Even if you suck at first, keep going and strive to make steady progress, so that one day you will have carved out a niche for yourself.
